The Cottage Garden

Go through the pergola gate from the Boxwood Parterre, down two steps and walk beside dry stack wall along our COTTAGE GARDEN.

In the 1880’s in England, artist and designer Gertrude Jekyll popularized this style of garden design. As the name implies, these gardens appear less formal. One would expect to find such a garden beside a cottage rather than a great manor house. Ms. Jekyll’s designs combined shrubs, perennials, annuals and roses. While these gardens may look haphazard, they are actually comprised of repeated patterns of color, structure and texture. She described them as, “ordered chaos”.

Our Cottage Garden is planted with pink shrub roses, pink and white peonies, many perennials and interplanted with annuals for constant color from Spring to Fall. Herbs including English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), green fennel (Foeniculum), creeping thyme (T. serphyllum) and cotton lavender (Santolina incana), are used for texture and fragrant foliage. You will find them planted within easy reach so you can touch them as you walk by.
