The Oriental Garden

Step through the next gate from the Chartreuse Garden is the ORIENTAL GARDEN.

The British have had a fondness for and been influenced by art and decorative styles from China and Japan for over four hundred years. That influence has also appeared in the gardens of England in the form of garden architecture, garden furniture styles and exotic plant material.

So it’s no surprise that you’ll find a small Oriental garden at Abbington Green. Two small garden statues of Foo dogs greet you from either side of the doorway. A pygmy Japanese maple tree (Acer palmatom dissectum) is to the left in an Oriental ceramic container. The teak bench beckons you to stay awhile here to view a path of Chinese stepping stones representing the four seasons and a small statue of Buddha. The serenity of this contemplation garden is due to its mainly monochrome palette.

On your right, attached to the House, you can see the Greenhouse. It was part of the original plans of this house in the early 1900’s. Herbs and many flowers spend the Winter months here.

As you continue your walk, you pass a variety of grasses and a bonsai evergreen (Juniperus sabina) on the way. A decorative pagoda and Oriental lion statue complete this garden.
