{"id":803,"date":"2015-02-13T20:22:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-13T20:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.abbingtongreen.com\/blog\/nicks-notes-2-13-2015-the-houses-story\/"},"modified":"2015-02-13T20:22:00","modified_gmt":"2015-02-13T20:22:00","slug":"nicks-notes-2-13-2015-the-houses-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.abbingtongreen.com\/blog\/nicks-notes-2-13-2015-the-houses-story\/","title":{"rendered":"Nick&#8217;s Notes 2.13.2015 &#8211; The House&#8217;s Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The House&#8217;s Story<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">The past few weeks I&#8217;ve shared with you Amber&#8217;s Story, and Our Story<br \/>about purchasing the Inn&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.so this week I would like to share<br \/>with you the Story of Abbington Green&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;a beautiful, historic home<br \/>in the Montford Historic District of Asheville, North Carolina.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">Montford is part of Downtown Asheville where all the unique shops and <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">excellent restaurants are located.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-gXFuwSVj-78\/VN5Wgn-PvCI\/AAAAAAAAAZc\/mzmizsGreKk\/s1600\/IMG_4473.jpeg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-gXFuwSVj-78\/VN5Wgn-PvCI\/AAAAAAAAAZc\/mzmizsGreKk\/s1600\/IMG_4473.jpeg\" height=\"307\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">I love sharing the story of this home with guests when they walk into<br \/>Abbington Green for the first time.&nbsp; There is so much history here and<br \/>it needs to be shared&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.that&#8217;s part of living in a century old<br \/>home.&nbsp; The house was built in 1907 and designed by architect Richard<br \/>Sharp Smith.&nbsp; He was one of the architects that worked on the Biltmore<br \/>Estate home.&nbsp; The original blueprints have recently been discovered at<br \/>the Historic Archives and are now kept at the Asheville City Hall.&nbsp; Once<br \/>Biltmore was finished, he was commissioned to build this home for Mr.<br \/>Jackson and his family.&nbsp; At that time the Jacksons were known for their<br \/>Bakery and Cheese shop in the city.&nbsp; They lived here about 15 years and<br \/>then sold the house to Mr. Wythe Peyton in 1921.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Peyton was the Post Master of Asheville and the Peytons raised<br \/>their four sons in this home. He later went on to begin the North<br \/>Carolina Highway system as a highway engineer.&nbsp; He was a prominent<br \/>member of the Men&#8217;s Garden Club of Asheville.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He was known for his<br \/>prize fruits and vegetables from the extensive gardens that were on the<br \/>property at the time.&nbsp; I can only imagine how proud he is looking at how<br \/>the Gardens of Abbington Green are still abundant and beautiful.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">\ufeff<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-oqz5LH4Hcr4\/VN5XK-yeGvI\/AAAAAAAAAZ0\/Crmp_H8kO-A\/s1600\/AG%2BMain%2Bgarden.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-oqz5LH4Hcr4\/VN5XK-yeGvI\/AAAAAAAAAZ0\/Crmp_H8kO-A\/s1600\/AG%2BMain%2Bgarden.jpg\" height=\"240\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-gDonwjbjjJM\/VN5W9jPBoeI\/AAAAAAAAAZs\/SzPtxMCp7w0\/s1600\/Parterre%2BMain.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-gDonwjbjjJM\/VN5W9jPBoeI\/AAAAAAAAAZs\/SzPtxMCp7w0\/s1600\/Parterre%2BMain.jpg\" height=\"240\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">Mr. Peyton passed away in 1956 and the family held the house until the<br \/>1960&#8217;s.&nbsp; The house is known as the Jackson-Peyton Home on the National<br \/>Historic Registry.&nbsp; The home was then purchased by an architect and<br \/>eventually was divided up and became a boarding house.&nbsp; Back in the 60&#8217;s you would not want to live in Montford.&nbsp; It was not safe, and both the house and neighborhood got run down.&nbsp; Luckily, the neighborhood bounced back and now Montford is a safe and very desirable neighborhood to live in.
